MEMORY TAPE: "I Can't" (For Phren)
It’s just the two of them, Ren and Akechi… although Ren has noticeably longer hair and a more feminine appearance.
They stare at one another, the air heavy in Leblanc, as Akechi looks directly at Ren, awaiting her answer. The look on his face gives no room for second thoughts, it’s now or never as Ren purses her lips, finally raising her eyes back up to meet his more properly. A small smile finally appears as she opens her mouth to speak.
“...I can’t do that to you, Akechi.”
-You need your freedom. I could never take that away from you.-
And for just the briefest second Akechi’s hardened mask breaks, replaced with a genuine surprise… before it returns to being more level… though not without a hint of something in his eyes.
On the branching path, Ren has made her choice as Akechi speaks again, as his resolve— and his fate— are set in stone. Ren understands this was the right choice, no matter the bitter sting she feels, no matter the wish she holds.
And as Akechi turns to leave, Ren goes to reach out to him, to ask him to stay just a bit longer… but she can’t bear to do it.
She won’t let herself have the time to change her mind.
So when Akechi has left, and Ren is alone… she just stands there, pulling out a glove from her pocket. She stares at it, and stares at it. Until finally, she speaks.
“...It isn’t over until our rematch.”
